Core Principles for Writing Wikipedia Articles

Moment of truth

Don't you feel like you've been readying for this moment your whole life? 😊

Building your brand posture, networking, gathering information, securing leads and notability coverage, all leading to this moment: you are ready to create your own Wikipedia page ━ or so it seems?

Do not worry. Navigating through the complex web of rules that govern Wikipedia community is certainly no easy task. If you think that it also takes impeccable writing style, your wits, and expert knowledge on the subject ━ well, you are correct. However, we think that it is possible to outline some core principles of creating a robust article ━ following them will most definitely help you to make sense of Wikipedia for a good start.

We can't comprehensively cover all the details out there, but below are the main ideas to keep in mind which will lead your page to success.

I. Comprehensiveness

According to Wikipedia guidelines, a good article must not omit major facts or details and places the subject in context. Keep the stress on the word "major": you do not need to cover every single detail about the subject. However, to put it in perspective, you will not be able to note a positive aspect of a public figure being involved in civil service without indicating their relation to separate criminal proceeding. Both facts are equally important aspects of their lives, regardless of the connotation that they carry.

Additionally, the text must be comprehensible: easy to perceive and understand. Use the best practices and proper grammar from college-level writing teachings. This includes structuring content into paragraphs as one complete prose work, as opposed to individual sentences. After all, you are building an article, and not a dry aggregation of bullet points.

II. Neutrality

The first holy stricture of Wikipedia is its encyclopedic nature, not a promotional platform. Articles must be free of any tone and bias, reporting facts ━ not opinions.

Therefore, all articles must be written from a neutral point of view and equally highlight major facts. Creating and publishing a biased article will result in a tag applied to it. Tags appear at the very top of the article and significantly reduce its trustworthiness.

III. Research

A direct culmination of the previous two principles, good research must lay at the core of any Wikipedia article. Given the assumption that your article was written in good faith and by comprehensive research of facts, it will be able to withstand toughest scrutiny from other contributors, just as if you were the judge. This means that all claims made in the article must be readily verifiable against reliable, competent, and notable sources. If there is controversy associated with the subject, provide the most accurate facts.

Another important aspect is the relevance of information. In addition to highlighting most favorable accomplishments of your business, make sure that the coverage includes up-to-date data, such as the latest net earnings figures. Even though you shouldn't place all the latest news about the company, like you would in a newspaper, the relevant recent data must be included.

IV. Organization

It is imperative for long articles to have well-articulated and reasonable structure. Commonly, this includes having a section which serves as introduction, summarizing and emphasizing the main ideas that will be further depicted in full detail, and giving the reader an overall understanding of the subject.

Next, there are section headings: these are like chapters in a book. They must contain logically arranged information that shares common relevance. There is no single guideline or consensus on how to present information on Wikipedia, however, always a great idea is to refer to existing well-maintained corporate-level company articles or famous biographies.

Into infinity

There is no end to Wikipedia ━ certainly not while our civilization still stands. So, the great content is there to stay ━ so long that it was written according to best practices and in good faith.

With that, be prepared to keep an eye on your pages forever. Any contributor can edit a Wikipedia page at any time. Most of them will bear rightful intentions, but even the best of them can use additional polish at times. Occasionally, you will face an editor with grammar issues, controversial sourcing, or biased tone ━ naturally, these instances should be remedied. On top of that, there are existing practices of page targeting with malicious intents. This could result in wrongful or framed information being presented on a page for millions of readers to rely on. Obviously, such edits have to go ASAP.

Conclusion

There are no limits to perfection, especially when it comes to writing contributions on Wikipedia. However, in the article above we have gathered the basic principles of article creation, which will certainly lead you to a good start. We sincerely hope that your content will be there to stay.

Cheers!
